Pouring precipitation postponed pavement pounding

The original plan for exercise today was:-

  • Run to gym
  • Gym 1 hour
  • Run home from gym
  • Cycle to work 4 miles
  • Cycle home from work 4 miles

When I awoke with the alarm at 5:15 am I realised another plan would need to be formulated, I am not up on gym etiquette yet being a newbie, but something told me arriving like a drowned rat and dripping all over the equipment would not endear me to my fellow gymers.

So I drove to the gym. On arrival my card would not open the door, the girl on the desk had to phone the man inside to get him to let me in (she did not have a key she explained!) on entry I explained that my card would not work to which Mr Grumpy Monday Morning Gym Man said as way of explanation “it wont because I’ve not turned the card reader on yet”, customer service obviously not his forte. I was thrilled after finishing the treadmill to find my friend on the adjacent machine, she had been there a while but I am so terrified of falling off the machine I keep my eyes front to avoid veering either way. Two shazruns in one gym could be a recipe for disaster, ok she is at the shazpowerwalk stage but only a matter of time. Made a date to meet again Thursday night.

Drove to work, drove home from work. Heated through leftovers for hubbys dinner (tasted better than it sounds), put mine in the oven and went for a quick (for me) one mile.

Totals

  • One morning run-cancelled
  • One hour gym session completed
  • One cycle ride cancelled
  • One quick mile completed in 8.38

I have been running since 2004 when I decided to do the Race for Life, as a close friend was terminally ill with cancer. Following that I did a couple of 10km at Leeds castle and Sandringham. Then in 2005 ran my first London marathon, then another in 2007 in blistering temperatures. I have entered the London marathon every year since but have been rejected, am now find maintaining my fitness & motivation hard, so when the email came through about Janathon I thought why not! Am hoping this helps with fitness, motivation and weight loss!! Wish me luck!

  1. Anyone who gets up at 5.15 am and goes to the gym gets my utmost respect. And in today’s weather, I’m not surprised you thought twice about cycling. My trainers are still wet from this morning despite sitting on the radiator all day. You made a wise decision! 🙂

    I often wonder this about the gym. You’re obviously there to use the machines, and some people REALLY sweat, so dripping a little rain water can’t be too harmful can it?! Just remember that gym towel! (Which is hopefully kept in a waterproof bag on the way down… otherwise… ????!)

    Awesome pace v impressed. Also just made a note to myslef that I must find a new adjective as I use the word awesome far too far. Not that that makes you less awesome, just highlights my woefully limited vocabulary…
